Hummingbird Nectar

We use this recipe here and our hummers love it!

1. Mix 1 part sugar with 4 parts water (use 1 cup sugar to 4 cups water) and bring to a boil for 1-2 minutes to kill any bacteria or mold present.

Do not use honey, Jell-O, brown sugar, or anything but real sugar. Especially do not use artificial sweeteners. Putting hummingbirds on a diet will kill them.  They burn huge amounts of energy for their size. They need real sugar.

2. Cool the nectar before you put it in the feeder.  (let it sit on your kitchen counter till it cools)

3. Fill the feeder and take it outside.

4.
Red dye should not be added. It's not necessary, and it's not good for the hummers.
They will find the food ok.

Any left over sugar water can be stored in the refrigerator for several days.

Nectar should be replaced a minimum of once a week and more often in the summer. If possible, its best to locate the feeder in the shade. Always clean your hummingbird feeder with mild detergent and rinse thoroughly each time you replace the nectar Check to make sure the feeding ports are clean and free of mold.

We also have nectar in stock if you'd rather buy it, but this recipe works just as well.

Just copy/paste the recipe into notepad and save it on your desktop, or print it and put it in your recipe box.
